Week #19 -- Drown
Title: Did You Know?
Rating: PG-13
Character: Hama
Warnings: Violence. No spoilers past The Puppetmaster.
Word Count: 257

The first guard was the one that Hama hated the most. He had grinned at her the night before as he saw her hanging weak and desperate in her bonds.

“I am still a Waterbender…” she had said to him.

“What will you do? Drown me in your dry little prison?” He had heated her chains a bit, enough to hurt, enough to prove that he had the true power here.

The next night, still bearing the blisters on her wrists, she enjoyed making him unlock her cell, throwing him to the floor. Later, when she was certain she was safe, she enjoyed killing him.

Or perhaps it was the second guard she hated the most, the one she found in the corridor, the one who had once deprived her of water for an entire day and a half just to watch her tears dry up. Hama made that one beg for a while. But she still got the treatment the first one did, and Hama let it last much longer, watching her victim twitch on the floor and struggle to cry out.

The guard at the main door, on the other hand, she had never seen before, so she only despised him for being in the Fire Nation. But that was enough, and she announced her intentions as she marched up to him, careful to control his hands and mouth first.

“Do you know,” Hama asked in an almost casual tone as she held out her hand, “that a man can drown in his own blood?”

Chilling! Awesome Hama!

Thank you! Hama fascinates me. It's not that Avatar is such a sweet innocent show in general, but they threw in a very dark character on what's supposed to be the "good side" and I loved that.

Ooh, this was really creepy. I was going to do something similar, but this is way better -- you've really captured Hama's character here! A great read. That last line was especially powerful.

Thank you so much! I'm really glad you liked it. Hama was one of the first characters I thought of, and then when I remembered she doesn't use water as much anymore I thought of that last line.

I'm sure there's room for more than one fic about her though!

(I like your icon.)

I wish we'd seen more of Hama in canon! Great fic, the easy violence shown here is very fitting.

Thank you! Yeah, Hama was plain scary. I really like that they let her whole scenario happen, even if they held back from showing her kill people. (I think they made it pretty clear she was capable of it though.)

I nevereverever wanna meet a waterbender with a grudge.

Nightmare fuel aside, excellent work writing Hama. Control's kind of the key to her character, and the lazy way she tortures her guards to death expresses that very well.

Thank you very much. I'm really glad you enjoyed the ficlet. Hama is one of the scariest characters I've ever seen in any fandom, actually.

Creepy! The last line was absolutely chilling.
I found this line sad and felt sorry for the guard at the main door:
she only despised him for being in the Fire Nation. But that was enough

Thank you very much! Yeah, Hama's hatred for the Fire Nation runs very, very deep.

Very chilling. I thought Hama was a very interesting character. You could still see a slim part of the woman she was, when she tells her story and speaks with Katara, but most of her humanity is swallowed up by her hatred. You did a good job to nail this hatred.

Thank you! Yes, it's especially chilling that you can see she used to be a regular person.

So so creepy but so amazingly written! Beautiful job! :D

*blush* Thank you so much. Hama is so dark and compelling to me.

Whoa. That was an amazing look into Hama. That last line was very creepy. Loved it! Excellent job.

Thank you so much! I'm glad you felt I portrayed her well.

Drowning... in... own... blood. -shudder-

That last line is beautiful and I think it fits her wonderfully. ♥

I know, it is pretty awful... I'm really glad you think it fits Hama though!

Oh my... this is so dark, but so utterly perfect for her too...
TeaRoses: Claudiarosehiptea on May 3rd, 2008 04:46 am (UTC)
Thank you so much! I guess I am a little into dark fic, but with characters like Hama around it's easier to see the darkness in the fandom.
